Farooq Abdullah Narrowly Escapes Gun Attack at Jammu Wedding: What Happened?

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples across the country, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) President, Farooq Abdullah, survived an assassination attempt on Wednesday evening. The incident took place in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu during a wedding ceremony.

Dr. Abdullah was attending the wedding of an NC worker’s son when a man approached him from behind and pointed a loaded gun at his head. Thanks to the quick reflexes of his security detail, the attacker was overpowered before he could fire the weapon. Dr. Abdullah and Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary, who was also present, are reported to be safe.

CCTV Footage Reveals Terrifying Moment of Attack

The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the venue. The footage shows Farooq Abdullah preparing to leave the wedding when the attacker, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, suddenly moved toward him. Jamwal reached point-blank range and aimed the pistol directly at Abdullah’s head.

The security personnel guarding the veteran leader acted instantly, tackling the gunman to the ground. The police have since taken Jamwal into custody and seized his licensed firearm. The area was immediately cordoned off by security agencies to ensure no other threats were present.

The Attacker’s Motive: "Targeted Him for 20 Years"

During initial police questioning, Kamal Singh Jamwal made a chilling confession. He told investigators, "I have wanted to kill Farooq Abdullah for the last 20 years. That was my only goal."

Interestingly, Jamwal is the cousin of Surjit Singh, the NC worker whose son’s wedding was being celebrated. Jamwal is a local businessman who owns shops in Jammu’s old city. Despite being a relative of the host, his long-standing grudge against the former CM led him to carry out this daring attempt in a crowded public space.

Serious Questions Over Z+ Security Breach

Farooq Abdullah is protected by Z+ category security, which includes highly trained NSG commandos. The fact that an armed individual managed to get so close to him has sparked a massive political controversy.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Farooq’s son, took to social media platform X to express his concern. He questioned how a man with a loaded pistol could reach point-blank range of a protected leader. He thanked God for his father’s safety but demanded answers regarding the "huge security lapse."

Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary also criticized the local police, noting that there was a lack of adequate police presence at the "Royal Park" venue, making it easier for the attacker to blend in with the guests.

Who is Farooq Abdullah? A Legacy in Politics

Dr. Farooq Abdullah is one of the most prominent figures in Indian politics. Before entering the political arena, he was a trained medical doctor. Following in the footsteps of his father, Sheikh Abdullah, he took over the leadership of the National Conference.

  • Three-time Chief Minister: He served as the CM of Jammu and Kashmir during three different terms (1982–84, 1986–90, and 1996–2002).
  • Central Minister: He served as the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy from 2009 to 2014.
  • Current Role: He remains a Member of Parliament and the President of the National Conference.

Current Status and Investigation

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case and are investigating whether Jamwal acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy. Security protocols for high-profile leaders in the region are expected to be reviewed and tightened following this incident.

While the political atmosphere remains tense, supporters of the National Conference have held prayers for Dr. Abdullah's long life. For now, the "Doctor Sahab" of J&K politics remains safe, though the questions regarding his security will likely echo in the assembly for days to come.
