IPL 2026 First Phase Schedule Announced: RCB to Begin Title Defense on March 28

The wait for cricket fans is finally over! The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially released the schedule for the first phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. In a high-voltage opening encounter, the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28, 2026.

The tournament opener will be held at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This season is particularly special as RCB enters the field not as pursuers, but as the reigning kings of the league after their historic maiden title win last year.

Election Impact: Why Only 20 Matches?

If you are wondering why only a partial schedule has been released, the answer lies in the upcoming Assembly Elections in five Indian states. The BCCI traditionally splits the IPL schedule into two halves during election years to ensure proper security and logistics.

The second phase of the tournament will be finalized only after the Election Commission of India announces the official polling dates for states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Consequently, the opening date of the league was also pushed back by two days, moving from March 26 to March 28.

Chinnaswamy Stadium Under Close Watch

While Bengaluru is set to host the opening match, there is a small "if" involved. Following a tragic stampede during last year's victory parade that resulted in 11 deaths, the Karnataka government has formed an Expert Committee to review stadium safety.

This committee will inspect the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 13, 2026. They will conduct a mock drill to check how the crowd will be managed. The matches in Bengaluru will only proceed once this committee gives a green signal. As a backup plan, RCB is also scheduled to play two of their home games in Raipur this season.

Sanju Samson’s Big Debut in Yellow

One of the biggest talking points of IPL 2026 is Sanju Samson. After being named the "Player of the Tournament" in the 2026 T20 World Cup, Samson has moved to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a massive trade deal.

Fans won't have to wait long to see him in action. CSK will play their first match on March 30 against Samson’s former team, Rajasthan Royals (RR). This emotional clash will take place in Guwahati, which serves as the second home ground for the Royals.

Key Highlights of the First 16 Days

The first phase will run for 16 days and features 20 matches, including four double-headers. Here are some major fixtures to watch out for:

  • March 29: Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede.
  • March 30: Rajasthan Royals (RR) vs Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati.
  • April 5: The massive "Southern Derby" between RCB and CSK in Bengaluru.
  • April 12: A heavyweight clash between Mumbai Indians and RCB in Mumbai.

The Road Ahead

The BCCI has confirmed that a total of 84 matches will be played this season, making it one of the longest editions ever. While the first 20 matches cover 10 different venues—including New Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad—the rest of the country will have to wait for the second phase announcement to know when their favorite stars will visit their city.

As the defending champions, RCB will have the honor of hosting the Final match at the end of the season, provided the safety clearances remain in place. For now, the stage is set for a summer of cricketing fireworks!
