IPL 2026 First Phase Schedule Announced: RCB to Begin Title Defense on March 28
The wait for cricket fans is finally over! The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially released the schedule for the first phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. In a high-voltage opening encounter, the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28, 2026.
The tournament opener will be held at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This season is particularly special as RCB enters the field not as pursuers, but as the reigning kings of the league after their historic maiden title win last year.
Election Impact: Why Only 20 Matches?
If you are wondering why only a partial schedule has been released, the answer lies in the upcoming Assembly Elections in five Indian states. The BCCI traditionally splits the IPL schedule into two halves during election years to ensure proper security and logistics.
The second phase of the tournament will be finalized only after the Election Commission of India announces the official polling dates for states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Consequently, the opening date of the league was also pushed back by two days, moving from March 26 to March 28.
Chinnaswamy Stadium Under Close Watch
While Bengaluru is set to host the opening match, there is a small "if" involved. Following a tragic stampede during last year's victory parade that resulted in 11 deaths, the Karnataka government has formed an Expert Committee to review stadium safety.
This committee will inspect the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 13, 2026. They will conduct a mock drill to check how the crowd will be managed. The matches in Bengaluru will only proceed once this committee gives a green signal. As a backup plan, RCB is also scheduled to play two of their home games in Raipur this season.
