Isreal Iran Conflict: Marriage and Background of Ayatollah Khamenei and Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh

 

Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh married Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 1964 in the city of Mashhad, in a traditional religious ceremony. At the time, Khamenei was an emerging young cleric who would later rise to become Iran’s Supreme Leader and a central figure in the country’s political-religious system.

Born in 1947 in Mashhad, Mansoureh came from a prominent religious family. Her father, Ayatollah Mohammad Bagher Khojasteh, was a respected cleric, placing her within Iran’s established Shia religious leadership circle.

Despite being the spouse of Iran’s highest authority, she maintained a notably low public profile and avoided active participation in Iranian political affairs. Her role remained largely within family and religious spheres.

The couple had six children — four sons and two daughters. The family has traditionally stayed away from media attention, with Mansoureh known for her modest lifestyle and quiet presence within Iran’s religious-political establishment.
